Aron Benjaminsen has been promoted to the Faroe Islands senior national-team squad, one day after scoring both goals in the U21s’ 2-1 win away to Estonia.
The 18-year-old Hearts winger delivered the decisive performance in Pärnu on Friday. Benjaminsen opened the scoring in the 55th minute before making it 2-0 eleven minutes later with a superb individual goal. Estonia pulled one back from the penalty spot, but the Faroes held on for the victory.
The result also gave the Faroe Islands U21s a new national record of 12 points in a qualifying campaign.
Benjaminsen’s promotion had already been left open as a possibility before the Estonia match. Senior head coach Eyðun Klakstein said when the squads were announced that Benjaminsen would first join the U21s for the trip to Estonia before a decision was made on whether he would move into the senior group during the international window.
Two goals later, that move has now been made.
Benjaminsen joined Hearts from Víkingur earlier this month on a four-year deal after a breakout season in Faroese football. Hearts credited him with eight goals and nine assists in 20 league appearances for Víkingur before the transfer.
SkyrScout published its scouting report on Benjaminsen in August, highlighting his explosive acceleration, one-v-one ability and left foot, with RW as his primary position and LW as an alternative.
