Josué Vergara marked his Belgian Pro League debut with a goal as KAA Gent opened their league season with a 2-0 home victory over KV Mechelen.
The 2007-born Panamanian started at centre-forward and was heavily involved before finding the net. Vergara was denied when sent one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 40th minute and had an acrobatic attempt blocked shortly afterwards.
Just before half-time, Momodou Sonko delivered from the right and Vergara controlled the ball, turned away from his defender and fired high into the net to give Gent a 2-0 lead.
He continued to threaten after the break and came close to adding another goal before leaving the pitch to applause in the 79th minute.
Vergara joined KAA Gent from FK Auda this summer after a remarkable spell in Latvia. Baltic Football News reported that the transfer was worth around €3 million, potentially a record outgoing fee from the Virslīga, after the striker recorded 13 goals and three assists in 17 league appearances for Auda.
SkyrScout profiled Vergara in May 2026, highlighting the 196 cm striker’s combination of physical power, mobility, technical ability and finishing with both feet.
