Scouting Report

Mamadou Sylla • 20-year-old attacking midfielder • Ivory Coast

Mamadou Sylla is a versatile attacking midfielder from Ivory Coast, currently playing for RFS in Latvia. Standing 186 cm tall, he combines an athletic build with impressive speed and acceleration.

He mainly operates in the right half-space, whether deployed as an attacking midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder or a winger. Thanks to his physical profile and attacking instincts, he can also be deployed as a second striker when chasing a result.

His standout quality is impossible to miss. Sylla possesses outstanding close control and technique, making him a flamboyant dribbler and an exceptional ball carrier. With quick changes of direction, excellent balance and explosive acceleration, he is a nightmare to defend against, regularly carrying the ball 30 to 40 metres at pace while eliminating multiple opponents.

Predominantly left-footed, he combines his dribbling with good vision and passing ability. He switches play accurately, delivers dangerous crosses and is capable of unlocking defences with clever through balls.

His movement inside the penalty area is equally impressive. He times his late runs superbly before finishing with powerful, well-placed headers. While dangerous inside the penalty area, he is just as capable of weaving past several defenders before curling the ball into the far corner with his excellent left foot.

Amidst all his attacking quality, it is easy to overlook how competitive he is without the ball. Sylla wins 7.9 ground duels per 90 minutes at a 45% success rate according to SofaScore, showing that there is plenty of bite to go with his flair.

Areas for improvement

Although already a capable aerial player, Sylla has the physical tools to become even more dominant. Better timing in midfield aerial duels would add another dimension to his game.

He could also diversify his movement by making more runs in behind the defence instead of always demanding the ball to his feet. Given his dribbling ability, that tendency is understandable, but adding another threat would make him even harder to defend.

Despite scoring several spectacular goals, there is still room to improve his efficiency in front of goal. A little more composure in key moments should increase his conversion rate.

He is yet to register an assist this season, although that statistic does not fully reflect the quality of chances he has created. With stronger teammates and continued development, that number should naturally improve.

Career trajectory and current form

Sylla joined RFS from the highly regarded Diambars Academy in Abidjan during the summer of 2024, initially featuring for the club’s reserve side. After impressing with both goals and performances, he earned a loan move to Virslīga side Super Nova ahead of the 2025 season.

The spell proved difficult, and after only six league appearances he returned to RFS in June.

Back with the reserves, Sylla quickly rediscovered his form, scoring regularly before making his first-team debut later that year.

Ahead of the 2026 season, he featured prominently during pre-season, but RFS decided another loan would best accelerate his development, sending him to BFC Daugavpils.

The move proved an excellent decision. Sylla produced five goals in 19 league matches, combining end product with eye-catching technical quality and spectacular solo runs.

Recognising his rapid progress, RFS recalled him before the European qualifiers. He has immediately justified that decision, scoring in both the Virslīga and the UEFA Conference League qualifiers after returning to the club.

Transfer outlook

Latvia currently sits 36th in UEFA’s league coefficient rankings following several encouraging European campaigns.

The exact length of Sylla’s contract remains unclear, although it is widely believed to run until at least the end of 2027. Regardless, RFS are unlikely to sell one of their brightest young talents cheaply. A transfer fee in the region of €1 million to €1.5 million would still represent excellent value.

Athletic midfielders with Sylla’s technical ability are rare. His profile would suit almost any league, although Belgium feels like a particularly logical next step given the country’s extensive scouting presence in Latvia.

If his development continues at the current pace, he has the potential to reach one of Europe’s top five leagues within the next few years.

For now, however, there is little reason to rush. Back at RFS and receiving regular first-team opportunities, Sylla is in an ideal environment to continue his development.

Remaining in Latvia until at least the winter transfer window should provide valuable domestic and European experience before taking the next step in his career.
