Colton Swan is a powerful and athletic centre-forward who combines good size with genuine pace, efficient technique and an impressive natural sense of timing.
Standing 188 cm tall, Swan has the physical profile to occupy central defenders, but he is far from a static target forward. He moves well into space behind the defensive line and has the speed to exploit it, with a measured top speed of 34.5 km/h supporting what is evident in the footage.
Timing and rhythm are recurring qualities in his game. Swan generally gets the ball under control quickly and has a clean first touch with either foot. He is not an elaborate dribbler, instead using simple and effective touches to progress the ball. He is particularly good at stretching a foot towards seemingly loose balls and nicking them beyond an opponent before continuing his movement.
His efficiency is particularly evident around the penalty area. Swan gets his shots away quickly and usually needs very few touches to finish an opportunity. He is also a strong attacking header of the ball, combining his size with good timing when meeting deliveries into the box. Three of his seven league goals have come from headers.
Although predominantly right-footed, Swan uses his left foot naturally enough to make it a genuine secondary option. He has both scored and assisted with his left foot, while he also shows good control with either foot.
Swan also has the ability to drop into deeper areas to receive possession rather than exclusively playing on the shoulder of the defence. From these positions, he shows surprisingly good vision and passing ability. He spots teammates making forward runs and has a good feel for both the timing and weight of his passes, allowing him to release runners into space.
Charleston Battery head coach Ben Pirmann highlighted similar qualities when Swan joined the club, praising his physical attributes, ability to attack the penalty area and willingness to link with teammates. Pirmann also described him as a player with considerable room for further development and a strong growth mindset.
Areas for improvement
Despite his effectiveness as an attacking header, Swan wins 42% of his aerial duels, suggesting there is still room to make greater use of his frame in general play.
He can also become stronger when receiving under pressure. His game is built more around quick, efficient touches than extended dribbling, so improving his ability to protect the ball and connect play with his back to goal would add another dimension.
Career trajectory and current form
Swan developed with Michigan Jaguars FC before joining the Colorado Rapids Academy, where he won the U-16 MLS Cup Golden Boot. He later scored six goals and provided three assists for Rapids 2 in MLS NEXT Pro.
After one season at Indiana University in 2025, he signed his first professional contract with Charleston Battery in January 2026. He has since made an encouraging start to senior football, scoring seven goals and adding two assists in 15 league appearances while averaging 56 minutes per game.
Swan has also represented the United States at youth international level, scoring on his U-18 debut against France in June 2025. He is currently part of the USA squad at the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Championship, where he has also received playing time.
Transfer outlook
Swan is under contract with Charleston until November 2027 and is already receiving meaningful senior minutes at 19. There is therefore little need to rush his next move.
His combination of size, pace, movement and goalscoring should attract interest if his development continues. MLS is an obvious pathway, while his profile could also appeal to European clubs looking for a young, athletic centre-forward with further upside.
