Edgar Piloyan • 21-year-old Defensive Midfielder • Armenia
Edgar Piloyan is a 21-year-old defensive midfielder standing 179 cm tall. He may not be the tallest, but he is strong on his feet, tough in shoulder-to-shoulder duels and possesses an excellent work rate, with the stamina to sustain an aggressive pressing game for the full 90 minutes. He can operate as either a No. 6 or No. 8, but his natural role is as a holding midfielder. He can, however, step into a more attacking box-to-box role when required.
Predominantly right-footed, Piloyan can strike the ball with serious power from distance, while also being very capable with his left. His two-footedness is particularly valuable in possession. He is comfortable playing shorter build-up passes from deep and helping set the tempo, but can also switch play with longer passes, deliver crosses and combine effectively in the final third. His passing accuracy is consistently high, and he has the technical ability to find teammates with key passes from a variety of positions.
Though a clear defensive midfielder, he’s surprisingly creative for his role. His close control and dribbling allow him to escape pressure, while he is also a very capable ball carrier at speed. This gives him the ability to turn defensive recoveries into attacking transitions, making his attacking contribution significant.
The first thing that really stands out, however, is his ability to read the game. Piloyan anticipates passes extremely well and has a knack for stepping in at exactly the right moment to intercept or recover possession. His aggression and anticipation allow him to win well over 50% of his ground duels, yet he often makes these recoveries look remarkably simple, almost as if he can simply run up to an opponent and take the ball away from them.
Another interesting aspect of his game is his movement into the box. Piloyan makes well-timed late runs, either creating space for attacking teammates or arriving in positions where he can contribute himself. His stamina and mentality become particularly valuable in close-fought matches, where he can still produce a powerful run from midfield late in the game. On several occasions, this can even see him overlap an attacker on the wing and deliver a dangerous cross in the dying minutes.
One final quality worth highlighting is his consistency. His floor is high, and even when he is not at his best, he never disappears from games or produces a genuinely poor performance. That reliability is an important part of what makes him an interesting prospect for the next level.
Areas for improvement
There are still areas to develop, most notably his aerial game. He has already made progress in this area compared with earlier seasons, but improving further in aerial duels would make him a more complete defensive midfielder.
Discipline was another concern. Piloyan picked up nine yellow cards in 25 appearances during the 2025/26 season, which fits with the aggressive nature of his game but is something he needs to manage better. Encouragingly, this appears to be an area he has addressed at the start of the 2026 season.
Overall, this young Armenian U21 international does not show many obvious weaknesses at his current level. He looks ready for the next step.
Career trajectory and current form
Considered a significant talent from his early years, Piloyan began his development at the Urartu FC academy before joining Avan Football Academy at the age of 16 in 2020.
In March 2021, he was picked up by Russian football academy FDC Vista, before making another significant move in August 2023 when he joined the second team of Russian Premier League club FC Krasnodar.
In February 2024, Piloyan moved to the Armenian Premier League with FC Van. His performances there caught the attention of Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv, who signed him for their second team for a reported €200,000 in July 2024. Once again, Piloyan showed enough promise at reserve level to earn his opportunity with the first team, making his debut in February 2025.
However, with regular first-team football still difficult to secure in Bulgaria, Alashkert FC came calling in the summer of 2025 with the promise of a more prominent role back in Armenia. Piloyan returned to the Armenian Premier League in a €200,000 transfer in July 2025, and the move has proven to be a very good decision for both player and club.
He delivered a promising 2025/26 campaign, but it is the beginning of the 2026 season that has really caught our attention. Piloyan has taken another step forward and has been outstanding for Alashkert, dominating the first six matches of the season and contributing one goal and three assists in the process.
Transfer outlook
Armenia currently sits 33rd in the UEFA league ranking. Alashkert were eliminated by CFR Cluj in the second qualifying round of the Conference League, but Armenian football has still enjoyed an impressive European campaign. FC Ararat-Armenia made history by becoming the first Armenian club to reach the Europa League league phase, while FC Noah qualified for the Conference League league phase for the second consecutive season.
For Piloyan, the next objective should be a move to a significantly higher-ranked league, ideally in the January 2027 transfer window or, at the latest, during the following summer.
We believe the Norwegian Eliteserien could be an excellent destination. His aggressive style, ability to win the ball, passing range, technical quality and stamina should translate well to the high tempo of Norwegian football. The step up would be significant, but Piloyan has many of the tools required to make it successfully.
Tactically, we see him fitting particularly well as the holding midfielder in a 4-3-3. His ability to cover ground, press aggressively and win possession gives him the defensive qualities needed for the role, while his excellent passing range and ability to set the tempo allow him to dictate play from the base of midfield. He can keep the ball moving with short combinations, switch play with longer passes or progress it himself, giving him the tools to contribute in several phases of the game.
His potential transfer fee is more difficult to estimate. We do not know the exact length of his current contract, although it may run until June 2027 if it has not already been extended. More importantly, Alashkert may not be under significant financial pressure to sell.
The club is owned by Bagrat Navoyan, who partnered with Russian businessman Anton Zingarevich in July 2025 to become co-owners. Zingarevich had previously financed a major project at rival club FC Van, and as part of the new arrangement, the footballing infrastructure he had built there was transferred to Alashkert, including the entire coaching staff and a substantial group of core players from FC Van.
