Scouting Report

Botché Candé is a 22-year-old defensive midfielder playing for FK Javor-Matis in the Serbian second tier. What immediately strikes you when watching him is his physical profile and athleticism. Standing at 187 cm, he combines very good acceleration and pace with immense strength and power, giving him an imposing presence in the middle of the pitch.

He can play both as a No. 6 and a No. 8, but his strengths are perhaps best suited to the holding midfield role he currently occupies in Serbia. He balances the midfield effectively, providing defensive security while still having the freedom to move forward when the opportunity presents itself. At times, this sees him operating more like a box-to-box midfielder.

Candé has a very good passing range and consistently high accuracy. Predominantly right-footed, he shows excellent vision and frequently plays passes that may look simple but open up space for his teammates. He is also capable of quickly switching play to the opposite side with high-quality long passes, giving his team an effective way of changing the point of attack.

One particularly interesting aspect of his game is how he receives passes from the defence. Candé regularly scans his surroundings before receiving the ball, meaning he knows where his next pass is going before the ball reaches him. He can turn directly onto passes from the back rather than simply receiving and playing backwards, allowing him to move the ball forward more quickly. His ball-carrying ability is also good, adding another dimension to his game when space opens up in front of him.

Defensively, Candé reads danger early and is quick to close the gap to opponents. He can challenge aggressively, win the ball or simply use his physicality to keep an opponent facing away from goal. His positioning and anticipation are particularly impressive, allowing him to intercept passes and then immediately look to turn the situation into an attacking opportunity.

He is extremely strong in both ground and aerial duels and maintains a high work rate throughout matches. Combined with his pace, this gives him the ability to cover significant amounts of ground and recover quickly when the team loses possession.

To top it all off, Candé has also emerged as a significant goal threat. He possesses very good finishing ability for a defensive midfielder and is particularly dangerous from attacking set pieces, where his intelligent movement inside the box allows him to find space. He can also arrive late in the box from midfield and has the technique to threaten from distance.

Another encouraging aspect of his current form is his consistency. Through the opening ten matches of the season, he has barely put a foot wrong and has established himself as one of the standout players in the division.

Areas for improvement

Candé has not yet accumulated many minutes of senior football at a high level, so there are naturally aspects of his game that can still be refined.

The most obvious area is maintaining his concentration and intensity throughout the full 90 minutes. At the moment, he can dominate matches for periods without necessarily maintaining that same level throughout the entire game. If he can raise his baseline and sustain his influence from start to finish, he has the physical and technical tools to genuinely control matches from midfield.

Discipline is another area to work on. He can pick up yellow cards a little too easily, and learning when to engage and when to make a more controlled tactical foul should help him manage games more effectively.

Career trajectory and current form

Botché Tcherno Candé, his full name, began his professional career with União Bissau in his native Guinea-Bissau before moving to Portugal. In July 2022, he joined amateur club AC Alcanenense on a free transfer.

A year later, in July 2023, he moved to FC Serpa, playing in the Campeonato de Portugal, the fourth tier of Portuguese football. His performances in the lower divisions did not go unnoticed, and in July 2024 he was picked up by the U23 team of Portuguese top-flight club CF Estrela Amadora.

In July 2025, Candé moved on a season-long loan to Lusitano Ginásio Clube Évora in Liga 3, the third tier of Portuguese football. Portugal’s second and third tiers are full of players with interesting profiles, and FK Javor-Matis clearly saw something they liked when their scouting department identified Candé as an ideal addition to their plans.

The Serbian club, based in Ivanjica, had been relegated from the top flight the previous season and were looking to build a squad capable of achieving an immediate return. In July 2026, Candé joined Javor-Matis for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract.

It already looks like their scouting department made an excellent decision.

Through the first ten matches of the season, Candé has been one of the best-performing players in the division. He has balanced the midfield superbly while also contributing four goals from his defensive midfield position; perhaps even more attacking output than Javor-Matis initially expected.

Transfer outlook

Serbia is currently ranked 29th in the UEFA league ranking, while the second tier is naturally a significant step below that level.

The fact that Candé has not played in a top-flight division since arriving in Europe in 2022, combined with the fact that he turns 23 in January, is a disadvantage when considering his next move. However, players with his particular combination of physical and footballing qualities are not easy to find.

At 187 cm, he combines strength, pace and acceleration with excellent duel ability both on the ground and in the air. Add his anticipation, positioning, passing range, ball distribution and ability to read the game, and you have a very interesting midfield profile. We have not even mentioned the goal-scoring contribution he has shown at the start of this season.

If he can maintain this level, I believe interest from clubs in stronger leagues will follow. January may come too soon for a major move, but the summer of 2027 could be a much more realistic opportunity.

Norwegian football looks like a particularly good fit. The Eliteserien would represent a significant step up in level and tempo, and Candé would likely need some time to adjust, but his athleticism, aggression, duel strength and ability to cover ground should translate well. His passing quality and ability to play as both a No. 6 and No. 8 would also give him tactical flexibility.

His transfer value is difficult to estimate. He only joined Javor-Matis in July 2026 and signed a three-year contract running until 30 June 2029. However, if he continues performing at his current level, I believe a transfer fee in the region of €1 million could be realistic.

For a player who has yet to play in a top division, that would be a significant investment. But Candé’s profile is unusual enough that I would not be surprised to see clubs start taking notice if he maintains his current trajectory.
