Benedek Varju is a versatile defender who has split his playing time between right-back and centre-back, with most of his centre-back appearances coming in a back three, although he has also featured in a back four. He has additionally played one match at left-back.

Defensively, Varju is very strong in 1v1 situations and competes well in duels. He is also effective in the air, particularly considering his 181 cm height, while generally avoiding excessive yellow and red cards.
