Arney Rocha is a versatile 22-year-old attacker who can play up front as one of two centre-forwards, as a second striker, number 10 or attacking number 8. His best position, however, is as an inverted left winger, where he can make the most of his strongest qualities.
Rocha may not look particularly quick at first glance, but he has very good acceleration and lightning pace over distance, reaching a top speed of 35.6 km/h according to Opta/SofaScore.
The Colombian is technically excellent, with good dribbling ability, although he is more efficient than flashy. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to read the game. Combined with a very good passing range, he can play excellent short combinations as well as precise long balls across the pitch. Predominantly right-footed, he is also very comfortable switching to his left foot without disrupting the flow of play.
Rocha is capable of delivering quality set pieces from both corners and free kicks, although this part of his game has not been showcased much this season. He is also a confident penalty taker. He has converted two of three penalties this season, with the miss being particularly unfortunate. His shot hit the crossbar and bounced narrowly back out after hitting the goal line.
Unfortunately, Rocha has spent most of this season either as one of two centre-forwards or in midfield, meaning we have only seen his best qualities in brief glimpses. His standout weapon is his movement from the left, particularly his well-timed, deep runs in behind the defence, often followed by a cutback or chipped ball towards the far post.
His current team does not use clear inverted wingers, nor does there appear to be a particularly defined tactical identity, which has made it difficult for Rocha to consistently showcase what he does best.
His height naturally limits his aerial contribution, which is not a major strength anyway, but he competes well defensively and wins a solid amount of his ground duels.
Areas for improvement
Rocha needs to sharpen his finishing, particularly in one-on-one situations against the goalkeeper. We believe much of this may be related to confidence, as he has demonstrated previously in Colombia that he is capable of finishing these chances well.
The accuracy of his crossing has also been inconsistent this season. However, considering he has rarely been used in his best position, we would not read too much into this yet. Playing regularly as an inverted left winger should give him more opportunities to use his pace, movement and technical ability in the areas where he is most effective.
Career trajectory and current form
Rocha played his youth football at amateur club CD Estudiantil before joining Valledupar FC, where he made his professional debut in the Colombian second tier in 2022. The club was later dissolved and reformed as Real Cundinamarca, with Rocha remaining with the team.
He showed steady development, scoring 11 goals in 37 appearances during the 2024 season. His breakthrough came in 2025 when Atlético Nacional sent Jayder Asprilla to Real Cundinamarca on loan. The pair terrorised the Primera B, with Rocha operating from the left and Asprilla leading the line.
Rocha finished the season with an impressive 13 goals and 11 assists in 45 matches, while Asprilla contributed 22 goals and 3 assists in 44 appearances.
Asprilla earned his move to Moldovan powerhouse Sheriff Tiraspol, while Rocha had to wait until January 2026 for his own opportunity abroad, joining USL Championship side Miami FC.
The move has not gone as hoped. Rocha has shown flashes of his quality but has struggled to produce consistently, recording only 4 goals and 2 assists in 17 matches. His 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 matches in the USL Cup offer some consolation, but the overall output is well below what we believe he is capable of.
A major factor is his usage. Rocha has not been consistently deployed as the inverted left winger where he enjoyed so much success in Colombia, and that has limited his ability to influence matches in the areas where his strengths are most obvious.
Transfer outlook
While Major League Soccer is ranked second in CONCACAF, the USL Championship is a very different proposition. For a 22-year-old player looking to build a career, we believe it is important that Rocha finds a more stable environment where his development and tactical role are given greater attention.
According to Transfermarkt, his current contract expires on 30 November 2026. Miami may have options attached to the deal, but we sincerely hope Rocha finds a club willing to give him a clearer role and, most importantly, use him as an inverted left winger.
Europe should be the priority. A reunion with Jayder Asprilla at Sheriff Tiraspol would be a fun story, but is probably unrealistic. More realistically, Rocha’s profile could work very well in Scandinavia.
The Swedish Allsvenskan would be an interesting destination, while the Norwegian OBOS-ligaen could also be an excellent environment to rebuild his confidence and get back to playing regularly in a 4-3-3 system. A number of clubs at that level use structures that would suit his profile very well.
At 22, Rocha still has plenty of time to get his career back on track. The player we saw terrorising the Colombian second tier in 2025 has not simply disappeared. The pace, technique, game intelligence and movement are still there. He now needs the right club, the right role and regular football to show it again.
